Porto · on the Douro

The six bridges cruise: 50 minutes, the best view of Porto, no planning.

Porto is built on two steep banks of the Douro, and the best way to see both at once is from the water. The six bridges cruise is short, cheap compared with most things you will book, and good at any time of day. Here is how it works and which boat to choose.

What you get

Ribeira, Gaia, and six bridges in under an hour

Boats styled on the old rabelos — the flat wooden boats that once carried port barrels down from the valley — leave from Cais da Ribeira on the Porto side and from the quay in Vila Nova de Gaia opposite. The cruise lasts about 50 minutes: upriver past the Luís I bridge, the Infante, the iron Maria Pia and the São João railway bridge towards the Freixo, then back down past Ribeira towards the Arrábida bridge and the river mouth, and back to where you started.

You see the Ribeira houses stacked up the hill, the port lodges’ names on the Gaia roofs, the Serra do Pilar monastery above the bridge. Most boats have an audio commentary; you do not need it.

Which one to pick

Getting to the quay

Cais da Ribeira is the riverfront at the bottom of the old town: walk down from São Bento station or the cathedral, ten to fifteen minutes downhill, or take the Guindais funicular down from Batalha. The Gaia quay is across the lower deck of the Luís I bridge. Show the ticket on your phone at the jetty; arrive ten minutes early in summer, when the boats fill up.

What it is not

This is a city cruise. The terraced vineyards, quintas and the long river trips upstream are in the Douro Valley, two hours inland — a full day, by tour, train or car. If that is what you are picturing, read the Douro Valley day trip guide instead. Many Douro day tours include an hour on the river at Pinhão, which is a different, quieter river experience.

Before and after

Walk the lower deck of the Luís I bridge to Gaia, or take the Gaia cable car from the riverfront up to the top of the bridge for the view back across. In the evening, a short fado concert is the obvious next step — see fado in Porto. Compare everything else on Klook’s Porto page.

Questions people ask

How long is the six bridges cruise in Porto?

About 50 minutes. Boats leave from Cais da Ribeira on the Porto side and from the Gaia quay opposite, sail upriver and down under the city’s bridges, and return to the same quay.

Is the six bridges cruise the same as a Douro Valley cruise?

No. The six bridges cruise stays in the city. A Douro Valley cruise or day trip goes two hours inland to the vineyards and takes a full day.

Ribeira or Gaia — where should I board?

Whichever side you are on. The route is the same; Gaia departures suit you if you are visiting the port cellars that day.
