Porto · Livraria Lello and the Clérigos Tower

Livraria Lello tickets: book the slot, go early, then climb Clérigos.

Livraria Lello on Rua das Carmelitas is the most queued-for room in Porto — a 1906 neo-Gothic bookshop with a carved wooden ceiling and the red forked staircase everyone photographs. Entry is by ticket, the queue is real, and the Clérigos Tower is two minutes away. Here is how to do both without wasting a morning.

How entry works

You need a ticket, and part of it comes back as a book

Lello started charging for entry in 2015, when the visitors began to outnumber the book buyers. The ticket is not a straight fee: it includes a credit you can put towards a book in the shop, so if you were going to buy one anyway, the visit costs you very little. Ticket types differ — some include a book from Lello’s own editions, some add the Lello Foundation — so read what you are buying before you pay.

Tickets are sold for a specific day. In spring, summer and around holidays the good times go first, and people without one end up in a long line outside on Rua das Carmelitas. Buying online the day before, or earlier in high season, is the single thing that makes this visit pleasant.

The Harry Potter story. You will hear that Lello inspired Hogwarts. J.K. Rowling has said she never visited the shop, so treat it as a legend. The building is worth seeing on its own terms.

When to go

Lello and Clérigos in one morning

They are almost neighbours: Lello on Rua das Carmelitas, the Clérigos Tower on Rua de São Filipe de Nery, a couple of minutes apart. A good order is Lello at your booked slot, then Clérigos straight after — the tower is less sensitive to the time of day, and the climb is a nice contrast to the crowded bookshop. Then walk downhill: São Bento station’s tiled hall, the cathedral, and down to Ribeira for lunch. That is the whole of day two on our 3-day Porto itinerary.

In the evening the Clérigos church also runs a light show, Spiritus; you will see it offered next to the tower tickets.

Should you skip it?

Skip Lello if you have one day in Porto and no ticket, or if crowds spoil things for you. You lose less than you think: the tower view, the São Bento tiles and the river are all free or cheap and less crowded. If you love bookshops, go — but go early and with a ticket already on your phone.

Questions people ask

Do you need a ticket for Livraria Lello?

Yes. Entry to Livraria Lello has been paid since 2015, and the ticket includes a credit you can put towards a book — check which ticket type you are buying, because the options differ.

Is Livraria Lello worth it?

Worth it if you like old bookshops and book ahead for an early slot. If you only want a photo of the staircase and hate crowds, skip it and climb the Clérigos Tower next door instead.

How far is Livraria Lello from the Clérigos Tower?

A couple of minutes on foot: Lello is on Rua das Carmelitas and the tower is just across the square, so most people do both in one morning.
