Fado in Porto: one hour, a glass of port, no talking.
Fado — the Portuguese song of longing, sung to the twelve-string Portuguese guitar — was recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2011. Lisbon is its home, but Porto has small, serious venues where you can hear it properly in an hour, often with a glass of port. This is how to choose.
Concert or dinner
Book a concert, not a fado dinner
There are two ways visitors meet fado. A fado concert is about an hour in a small room: two or three singers, the Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar, a short explanation of what you are hearing, and usually a glass of port. A fado dinner is a restaurant meal with songs between courses — longer, more expensive, and the food is not the reason to go.
For a first time, the concert is the better evening: you hear more music, it ends in time for dinner somewhere you actually want to eat, and the rooms are made for listening.
Two traditions. Lisbon fado is the solo, emotional style most people imagine. Coimbra fado was created by university students and has its own songs and instruments. Some Porto venues present both in one show.
Fado Maior do Porto: intimate concert
One of Porto’s oldest taverns, in Miragaia. A small room, artists close to the audience and singing without microphones; the show presents both Coimbra and Lisbon fado. A glass of port is an option at checkout.
A one-hour show in the original music room of a downtown house, with a glass of port and a short history of fado. Premium seats add a charcuterie board.
Want the most music, no frills: Fado Maior or Fado na Baixa.
Want a beautiful room: Destino Fado, in the mansion’s music room.
Already going to Gaia for port: the Cálem visit with fado — one booking, one evening. More cellars compared on port cellars in Gaia.
Time: early-evening shows leave room for dinner afterwards. Check the times on the ticket page — they vary by day and season.
Fado etiquette
The one rule: silence while someone sings. Drinks are served between songs, not during them. Phones down, no flash. Applause at the end of each song is fine; talking over the guitar is not. Arrive a little early — the rooms are small and late arrivals wait for a break between songs.
Make an evening of it
A late-afternoon six bridges cruise, then a fado concert, then dinner — that is a first evening in Porto that needs no other plan. If you want a guide to explain what to order at dinner, start the trip with a food tour. More evening ideas on Klook’s Porto page.

In small concert rooms in the old town — Fado Maior in Miragaia, Fado na Baixa on Rua de São João, A Casa do Fado at São João Novo, Destino Fado in a 19th-century house downtown — and in the Gaia port cellars, where some visits end with a short fado set.
How long is a fado show in Porto?
